At Captivate Presentations, we have the strong belief that regardless of the situation, bullet points need to stay out of presentations- really.

It’s a trap that many have fallen into, as displaying all information on a slide using bullet points not only relieves the presenter of relaying information to the audience but allows the audience to read for themselves, right? Wrong.

The truth is, bullet points defeat the purpose of having the presenter there at all. By the time they’ve read out the text on the screen the audience is two steps ahead of them, the presenter isn’t communicating well with the audience as their back is to the screen, and audience engagement decreases. (If there is too much information for this to be avoided, then why not print out the information as a hand out for the audience?)

Presentations should be a visual aid for the presenter, not a hindrance, and there are many tools that can help in delivering an effective presentation without asking the audience to multitask:

• Animation (see my blog post re: animation here)
• Effective presentation delivery
• Great design- a well-designed presentation will not only keep your audience engaged but using our methodology of Design, Logic and Science you will also ensure that the audience will remember your key messages when you’re no longer in the room.
• Clear and concise messaging- your key messages must be clear, concise and memorable.

Luckily, this is our area of expertise. Our CAPTIVATE service will not only support you in defining your key messages, but support you in the design and delivery of your presentation. Give us a call now to request your free presentation sample: +44 (0) 203 291 3897
